YOU ARE GOD ALONE, FROM BEFORE TIME BEGAN

YOU WERE ON YOUR THRONE,YOU ARE GOD ALONE.

Alcoholism is a drink and psychoactive drug containing ethyl-alcohol which is commonly referred to as ethanol. It is also a colourless, volatile, inflammable and intoxicating liquid usually called ethanol. It is a solvent with wide application in chemistry and in industry.the refined form is usually distilled from wine and other fermented liquors.

Alcohol comes in various forms and names examples bear, brandy, whisk y gin, wine e.t.c.innumerable test of physical and mental performance have been used to demonstrate the effects of alcohol. Results shows that alcohol reduce visual activity and delays recovery from visual dazzle, it impairs test, smell, hearing, muscular co-ordination and steadiness and prolongs reaction time.

At the same time, the subjects usually have an increase confidence in their ability to perform well when tested and underestimate their errors ,even after quite low doses.Attentiveness and ability to assimilate, sort and quickly take decisions on continuously changing information input decline. This results particularly inattentiveness to the periphery of the visual field, which is important in monitoring.

All this are evidently, highly desirable effects of alcohol when a person is a position where failure to perform well may be dangerous.

MY DREAM FOR NIGERIA

MY DREAM FOR NIGERIA

Nigeria, my mother birth place, my father land, the pride of the black race, the giant of Africa Continent, the great contributor to peace and world security. It surprises me that with all these blessings we still quarrel, fight and kill ourselves.

I have a dream to see Nigeria render accordingly to every citizen equal opportunity, equal right  representation in all the tiers of government especially from the grass roots. My dream is to live in a Nigeria where the price of petroleum such as gasoline, kerosene and diesel are sold in a way that even the poor masses of this great country can afford without stress, where the arbitrary increase in the price of fuel will be a thing of the past.

I dream to live in Nigeria where poor graduates and young school leavers are gainfully employed. A country where the number of touts, arm robbers, suicide bombers and dubious politicians will not have a place in the country.

Oh! I am looking forward to that day when the Nigeria education will be uplifted to a greater glory. Devoid of strike.

It is my desire that Nigeria becomes self-sufficient and self-relevant in food production so to feed her citizens and still have enough or surplus to export, in order to gain foreign exchange. I see Nigeria being counted amongst the world power, I see Nigeria economy taking the lead amongst other African countries.

Oh! How I long to see Nigeria launched into the part of justice and fairness, where no one is victimised based on his or her ethnic group, where no one is murdered for speaking the truth on any rational issue.

I love to see a Nigeria society free from tribal, communal and inter-tribal wars, the Nigeria society free from violent, bombings, kidnapping, politically motivated killing and a lot of others crimes perpetuated amongst youths in the country.

A Nigeria where politicians be more of a leader and not a politician, as his Excellency the governor of Imo State, Owello Rochas Okorocha said, and I quote ‘A leader is different from a politician’’ while a leader thinks about what he can do for his people, a politician thinks about his political career the next election etc. our democracy should be the one we know, which is the government of the people, by the people and for the people and not the government of the few, by the few and for the few.

In conclusion, I look forward to see my country Nigeria, being a true giant of Africa in all aspect of human life. Therefore all hands must be on deck to chase out with riffles, corruption, examination malpractice, child abuse/labour, indecent dressing, cultism, arch robbery and other misconduct and put on the armour of peace and unity, not only hearing one Nigeria on radio, TV and news papers, but being active participants in making sure that this comes to pass with this and many more, my dreams, our dreams will come to fulfilment and Nigeria our great country will be among the best in the world on or before 2020. Long live Nigeria.

AN ARTICLE ON “BENEFITS OF PHYSICAL FITNESS”. By Anthony Effiom. 12/MAC/032

Physical fitness is a general concept that is defined in many ways by different scientists. According to health and wellness scientist C.J. Caspersen, physical fitness generally refers to to a set of health-related attributes (referring to athletic ability). There are two major categories considered when it comes to physical fitness:

1. General Fitness

2. Specific Fitness

General Fitness: It could be described as a state of good health and well-being.

Specific Fitness: It is task-oriented based on the ability to perform specific aspects of sports or occupation.

Physical fitness can generally be achieved through nutrition, correct hygiene, rest and exercise. It can also be defined as a set of attributes that people have that relates to ability to perform physical activity. Physical fitness is very beneficial to the body. Its benefits are numerous and they include:

• Better Health
• Greater and improved strength
• Flexibility
• Increase in energy
• Improved physical appearance
• Positive attitude and mood

Regular exercise can lead to both immediate and long-term benefits. Regular physical activity has been shown to reduce the morbidity and mortality from many chronic diseases like heart disease, breast cancer, lung cancer, colon cancer, diabetes, metabollic syndrome. The benefits of fitness far out-weighs the inconvenience posed by regular exercises. To reap the maximum benefits, your program should include five main components which are – cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, muscular endurance, and muscle strength.

– CardioVascular Endurance: It refers to the ability of your heart and lungs to work together to fuel your body with oxygen. The “Cooper Run” is most often used to test cardiovascular endurance. Aerobic conditioning like jogging, swimming, and cycling can also help improve cardiovascular endurance.

– Muscle Strength: Muscle strength refers to the amount of force a muscle can exert, in a single effort. Exercises like the bench press, leg press, or bicep curl are used to measure muscle strength.

– Muscle Endurance: Refers to the ability of a muscle to perform a continuous effort without fatiguing. Cycling, step machines, and situp tests are often used to measure muscular endurance.

– Flexibility: It is the ability of each joint to express its full range of motion. Flexibility can be tested by stretching individual muscles or by performing exercises such as ‘the lunge’ or the ‘sit-and-reach’.

Steps to Improve Physical
Fitness

1. Motivation: Find something to make you want to improve your physical fitness. Write down a target on what you will achieve by improving you fitness.

2. Start: Eat healthier foods such as vegetables, fruits, fish, meat, etc. Also, eat at the right time of the day. Drinking lots of water too will keep you hydrated. It can also lead to weight loss.

3. Exercise Daily: Always do stretches before you exercise because if you don’t, you might sustain a muscular injury. You are likely to pull a hamstring or feel pains.

4. Exercise late in the Day: Do the occasional set of push-ups, sit-ups, star-jumps etc.

With numerous benefits on offer from engaging in physical fitness exercises, more and more people are likely to join gyms, fitness clubs, e.t.c.

AN ARTICLE ON “RAPE”

QUESTION 4

AN ARTICLE ON “RAPE”

By Ogbaji Martina Omahi (12/MAC/091)

According to the oxford dictionary. Rape is an act of forcing somebody to have sex when they do not want to. It is an act of having sexual intercourse with  some one against his/her will.

In Nigeria, rape is unlawful, when committed on a person below sixteen (16) years, it is called defilement and when it is committed on a person above sixteen (16) years, it is called “Rape” it is a serious offence in Nigeria. The penalty for defilement and rape in Nigeria is life imprisonment, and the personality for attempting to rape is fourteen (14) years imprisonment.

“Rape” is totally degrading, distasteful and condemnable act, it has become so rampant in Nigeria. Research shows that in   the year 2003, among violent crimes committed against the female sex, 38% was rape committed by the victim’s current, former spouse, or boy friend (Blessing E.O 2011).

Some causes of rape  have been said to include indecent dressing, street hawking, idleness etc.  in recent years, the rate at which the girl child dresses and exposes her body parts is becoming alarming and disheartening. A young alarming and disheartening. A young lady, and in source cases a mature woman dress leaving some sensitive park at their bodies to be exposed and this form of dressing is common among the University and secondary School girls. This dressing style is being does not know that every out fit has a message they convey from their dressing style. Street hawking is another major cause of rape in Nigeria. A girl child that goes about hawking on the street faces more danger and possibility of being raped by those who claim to patronize her business. Parents that must send their female children to hawk things must monitor insist that the girls should report any form of advances to them.

Rape has caused death, disease unwanted pregnancies and emotional trauma to the victims. The only way to prevent rape occurrence in Nigeria starts from the family, as it is the smallest and immediate unit of every society where the child needs to be educated at the earliest opportunity. The school is another place, where the girls learns about rape, as the female teaches educate the pupils/students on the effects of rape in the society. The church is another place where the teaching is being carried out, as they instill discipline and the fear of God in accordance with the doctrine of God’s word into the minds of its members.

Conclusion

Rape is a serious offence in Nigeria, A girl child should be educated on the effects of rape. The offenders (Rapist) are entitled to life imprisonment as a sentence for their wicked act.

“THE POOR STATE OF PUBLIC HOSPITAL”

AN ASSIGNMENT ON DESKTOP PUBLISHING (MAC 1203)

AN ARITCLE ON TOPIC: “THE POOR STATE OF PUBLIC HOSPITAL”

EBONG, ANTHONIA DICKSON

YEAR ONE

THE POOR STATE OF PUBLIC HOSPITAL

The state in which we find our public hospitals leaves much to be desired. The prevailing conditions in these hospitals make them assume the features of graveyards and it is high time something is done to arrest the deplorable situation.

SHORTAGES OF DRUGS /LACK OF MEDICAL EQUIPMENT

In nearly every hospital there are shortage of drugs and vital medical equipment such as x-rays and surgical machines. I recall a case in which a friend went to a public hospital with an injured wrist but could not have it x-rayed because the x-ray was out of use. The doctor merely prescribed some injections for him and had his hand bandaged. Days later there was a complication of the injury and his hand was painfully swollen.

INSUFFICIENCY BEDS FOR PATIENTS

A common feature in our hospitals is the glaring insufficiency of beds in the wards. As a result some patients bring portable beds for their personal use. Besides, the fewness of beds results in many patients being discharged before they are well enough in order to make room for fresh patients.

NONCHIALANT OF SOME DOCTORS AND NURSES

One of the most disconcerting problems in hospitals is the nonchalance of doctors and nurses. Some doctors spend too little time with their patients, their attitude suggesting that they are rushing to do other things and that they do not care about their patients. Many nurses subject their patient to inhuman taunts and ridicule by shouting at them, mocking them or simply disregarding them. Thus the humanitarian aspect which is an integral part of their profession is objectionably played down. Take for instance the case of a person who was knocked down unconscious by a car and who was bleeding profusely taken to the hospital only for nurse to insist on their getting a police report on the accident before they would attend to the victim! This, no doubt, is incredible, outrageous and preposterous; yet it is a common occurrence. Furthermore, these is wanton favouritism in hospitals and it is very common for numbers of persons who came later and often look healthier to either be called first for consultation or to walk defiantly past helpless and long-suffering patients whose only crime is that they have no intimacy with the doctor.

SOME DOCTOR AND NURSES REFER PATIENTS TO THEIR PRIVATE CLINICS.

Some doctors prefer to refer patients to their private clinics where they can charge them large sums of money. In this case the unsuspecting patients are given prescription forms to take to the said clinics and are denied the drugs they should be given at the public hospital. As if this were not enough wickedness, these doctors pilfer drugs in the government hospitals, as do some nurses also, and sell them to their helpless victims.

HOSPITAL SURROUNDING ARE UNHYGIENIC

The surroundings of many hospitals are far from hygienic in terms of disposal of sewage and refuse as well as application of disinfectants and germicides. This situations is obviously unfortunate since it forments ground for infections to be caught by unwary patients.

INABILITY OF GOVERNMENT SHOWN SUFFICIENT CONCERN

Most of the problems arising in our hospital are the result of the government’s lukewarm attitude to them or sheer neglect of them. The government should show greater concern for our hospitals as well as for doctors, nurses and para-medical personnel. They should be given adequate remuneration and incentives so that they eschew corrupt practices. Essential drugs and equipment/machinery should be made available for their use so that they can derive the proper job satisfaction they envisage. Doctors and nurses who do not conform should be dismissed and humane ones put in their places. Hospital cleaners should be made to work hard to keep the surrounding clean.
